First I know guinea pigs and rabbits are not supposed to live together but it was a vet who actually suggested this. In reality the difference between a dwarf rabbit and a guinea pig is not that great.
Make sure that the rabbit is neutered so the guinea pig is not mounted by the rabbit.
Can dwarf bunnies live with guinea pigs. In my experience rabbits and piggies should never be housed together. The rabbit will most likely bully the guinea pig but also they are completely different species not similar in any way and need different food too. Both rabbits and guinea pigs do like company but only with their own type.
There is a certain type of bacteria that can cause serious respiratory illness in guinea pigs thats harmless to rabbits. Rabbits can carry this bacteria and spread it to guinea pigs if theyre kept together. Rabbits and guinea pigs also need different amounts of space and generally have different needs so its best to stick to the same species.
So how can I give my rabbit the company. First I know guinea pigs and rabbits are not supposed to live together but it was a vet who actually suggested this. A Netherland Dwarf is almost the same size as a mature well fed boar guinea pig.
And for over a year everything was hunky dory. The rabbit and the 3 male guinea pigs got on fine. However most times when they are kept together the rabbit will often try to mate with the guinea pig and this could cause injuries for the guinea pig as it is smaller than the rabbit.
Also the behavioural traits of these animals are totally different. The bacteria Bordetella bronchisepticais the most common cause of respiratory disease in guinea pigs. Rabbits cats and dogs can carry this bacteria which can pass to guinea pigs and cause disease.
Therefore guinea pigs shouldnt be housed with rabbits and should be kept away from dogs and cats. According to the RSPCA it is not the best idea in the world to keep rabbits and guinea pigs together there are many reasons for this. Rabbits will be much happier if they are kept with other rabbits and guinea pigs will thrive better if they live with other guinea pigs.
Why Guinea Pigs and Rabbits Shouldnt Live Together Yes pet rabbits and guinea pigs are both cute cuddly and live in hutches but that is where the similarities end. Heres why it is not a good idea to house rabbits and guinea pigs together. Their diets are different.
If a guinea pig and rabbit are living together then do ensure that the guinea pig has access to a retreat where they can get away from the rabbit. This should be somewhere where the rabbit cannot access. Make sure that the rabbit is neutered so the guinea pig is not mounted by the rabbit.
Make sure they are fed differently and in different areas. Hi everyone This is a question I get asked a lot here is my answer based on the research I have done. I havent made it to shame anyone who keeps rabbits.
Rabbits can become diabetic or develop kidney problems from sweet fruits and vegetables far faster than guinea pigs will. Rabbits need a much greater ratio of alfalfa to the rest of their food than guinea pigs do. Not to mention rabbit food lacks the vitamin-C that guinea pigs need.
Another reason why you dont want rabbits and guinea pigs to live together is that rabbits tend to mount on smaller guinea pigs. Although its not possible for guinea pigs to get pregnant still the stress and injury that it can possibly acquire from rabbit mounting are not worth it. Moreover these two species have different ways of communicating with each other.
Therefore confusion and. Guinea pigs with other pets Ive often been asked whether a guinea pig can cohabitate with rabbits mice and other small animals. The answer is generally no except for mellow dwarf rabbits.
Even then its wise to be cautious until you know that your cagemates will get along well. Dwarf rabbits are very popular among people who live in apartments and who prefer a small pet. In reality the difference between a dwarf rabbit and a guinea pig is not that great.
However we cannot underestimate the guinea pigs. There are many varieties and these differ in color and type of fur. Rabbits can live a long life as carriers of Pasteurella and not even show any symptoms.
However guinea pigs are highly susceptible to respiratory infections and their fragile immune system is not equipped to battle this pathogen. If exposed to Pasteurella a guinea pig is many times more likely than a rabbit to succumb to the organism and die. Guinea pigs and rabbits do not live with each other in the wild.
If you do want your guinea pig and rabbit to interact do so with caution supervision and be close and nearby at all times. Keep them contained in a pen but with enough room to disperse and go their own ways. These animals do NOT live in the same cage and bunnies and guinea pigs should always live separately and only play when supervisedMy Neth.
I have 3 lovely guinea pigs. 2 sisters American satins who are about a year and 4 months and a younger girl who i recently adopted. It was a tough start but they all get along well now.
They have this huuuge outside cage. Its about the size of a regular trailer. And they love it out there.
They have tunnels and huts and 13rd sand and 23rds lined with hay. Guinea pigs and rabbits can make good companions but rabbits are bigger and can inadvertently injure a guinea pig. Plus guinea pig lovers will tell you that rabbits are carriers for bordatella a disease that can be fatal to guinea pigs.
However having said that I know of several people who have successfully had rabbitguinea pig combos.
